MUSC Futsal is a winter indoor league co-sponsored with the Montclair Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs. Games run on Saturdays from January through mid March. There are no midweek practices. (Some older divisions may have practice sessions before games.)
The game of futsal has its origins in South America in the 1930's. The word futsal is simply a contraction of the Spanish "futbol" and "sala" (room), so "football in a room." There are Futsal leagues all over the world at every level, including professional leagues and a FIFA Futsal World Cup every four years.
Futsal, like basketball, is 5 v 5 (in this case 4 + a goalie) for our older groups and 4v4 with no goalie for our youngest groups. It is played on a basketball court or other hard surface. Futsal uses a smaller, low-bounce ball that stays at players' feet better, encouraging quick, skilled, controlled play.
MUSC Futsal breaks down into grade-level divisions, from first through 8th grade. The program is open to all Travel and Recreation league players, as well as new players from Montclair and surrounding towns. Futsal is a game-day-only activity. Games are approximately 55 minutes long.
Futsal runs from the first Saturday of January through mid-March. A team uniform is included. Players must wear shinguards and sneakers. NO CLEATS!
