MUSC Futsal is a winter indoor league co-sponsored with the Montclair Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs. Games run on Saturdays from January through March. There are no midweek practices. (Some divisions will have practice sessions before games.) The 2019 Winter season will add Friday evening games for 7th - 9th graders.
The game of futsal has its origins in South America in the 1930's. The word futsal is simply a contraction of the Spanish "futbol" and "sala" (room), so "football in a room." There are Futsal leagues all over the world at every level, including professional leagues and a FIFA Futsal World Cup every four years.
Futsal, like basketball, is 5 v 5 (in this case 4 + a goalie) and is played on a basketball court or other hard surface. Futsal uses a smaller, low-bounce ball that stays at players' feet better, encouraging skilled, controlled play.
MUSC Futsal breaks down into grade-level divisions, from first through high school. The program is open to all Travel, Recreation and High School players, as well as new players from Montclair and surrounding towns. Futsal is a game-day-only, roughly one-hour commitment.
Futsal runs from the first Saturday of January through mid-March. Registration is $75. A team uniform is included. Players must wear shinguards and sneakers such as Sambas, futsal shoes, or something comparable. NO CLEATS!
